IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. There are currently about 15 of them in India. These are highly prestigious institutes known for their high standard education in engineering and technology courses.
IIT Kharagpur was first established in 1951 and most of other IITs were established in the next few years time.
Students who have managed to enrol themselves in these institutes so far have had to go through fierce competition and achieve top marks in the nationwide competitive screening examinations.
IIT graduates and postgraduates get absorbed very quickly into well placed jobs in major technological organsiations and industries in each and every corner of the world.
Minister of state for human resources, Mrs Daggupati Purandeswari made a recent announcement that IIT act is being amended to include medicine courses in IITs.
A few IITs including IIT Kharagpur have come forward to support this amendment offering to start medcine courses in their premises.
Health Ministry of India immediately opposed this idea quoting problems with regulation of medicine courses if they are run by Ministry of the human resource de velopment.
The medicine courses in India including the dental courses are regulated by Indian Medical Council and Indian Dental Council which are under the control of Indian Health Ministry.
Any increase in the number of enrollments per year in medicine courses, be it graduation courses or postgraduation courses can only take place after the prior approval of central government of India as per the Indian Medical council Act and Indian Dental Council Act (1956).
The introduction of medicine courses in the IITs may lead to overlapping of jurisdiction and create problems with regulation of medicine courses as IITS are currently under the control of HRD minsitry.
