Indian Medical Council dissolved

18/05/2010

The Honourable President of India Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil issued an ordinance on 15th May 2010 which dissolved Indian Medical council.

This is an amendment to the Indian Medical council Act -1956 and is called The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Act- 2010.

This ordinance was passed immediately after the IMC chief Mr Ketan Desai was caught red handed by the Indian Anti corruption Bureau officials accepting a bribe of millions of Indian Rupees. Mr Desai was receiving the bribe in return for the approval of permission to a new medical college in Punjab state.

As per the ordinance, the medical council of India will stand superseded from the date of commencement of the new ordinance. The president, Vice president and other members of the council shall vacate their offices.

The central Government will appoint a new council made up of seven governors essentially being senior respected members of medical fraternity in India. This board of governors shall hold their positions at the pleasure of the Central Government of India.

The board of governors shall exercise the power and discharge the duties of the council under the new act. They are allowed to grant independently permission for establishment of new medical colleges in India as well as grant approval to newer higher education courses in any of the existing institutes.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) the national body of medical professionals opposed the dissolution of Indian Medical Council by the central Government and expresses fears that this may lead to politicisation of education in the country.
