Australia is set out to introduce the new controlling body for nation wide registration across the whole nation in July 2010.
In March 2010 the council of Australian Governments (COAG) signed an intergovernmental agreement to create a single national scheme for registration and accreditation of health practitioners. The commnencement date for this national scheme is 1st July 2010.
The new regulatory authority is meant to introduce uniform regulations across all states in Australia including Queensland and Northern territory.
It will allow free movement of doctors between different states and also give them common national registration across Australia.
Western Australia initially opted out of the National board of registration when it was announced but it has announced later that it has opted in for Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency and the national registration scheme.
To support the new process, the Medical Board of Australia (“National Board”) has been established and its website is available at www.medicalboard.gov.au
